Just as we exited the tent, Dr. Jill Pittman walked towards us.

“How did you two get here before me?”

I sighed. “Looking for a missing girl. Thought she might have been it.”

Jill frowned. “No luck?”

“Nope. She looks like our girl but has a different neck tattoo.” I pulled up the picture on my phone.

“She didn’t get it covered up?”

“She posted her whole life on social media. If she did, she would have posted. We will still wait for the DNA to come back for confirmation, but I don’t think it’s her.” I looked back at the tent for a minute. “I am curious, though. When will you be able to tell if she was buried alive?”

“You think she was alive when the killer buried her?” Jill looked from me to Tony and back.

I glanced at Tony and shrugged. “I do.”

“It is weird that her eyes were still open even after being buried.”

“I see.” Jill inched toward the tent. “She must be fresh because nothing had gotten to her yet. Something would have eaten her eyes first.”

My stomach soured. That was not the image I wanted to walk away with. As I walked across the sand, I kept staring at my feet. Was there anyone else buried here?

Were we stomping across their bodies?

“Best to not think about it.” Tony placed a finger underneath my chin and pushed up. “Stop doing that before you walk into something.”

“Point made.”

“And we can’t dig up the whole beach.”

He always knew what I was thinking. He looked at my face and could see the thoughts forming in my mind. I wasn’t sure how I felt about that.

We returned to the field office and relayed what we learned to Davies and Hattie. Usually, her office felt spacious. Large enough to fit at least ten people comfortably. But with the four of us, it felt cramped. Something else was taking up space—something we couldn’t see. The air was heavy and anxious. Davies sat at her desk. Her forefinger tapped against her chin every few seconds.

“So it wasn’t her?” ASAC Davies looked skeptical. Or maybe annoyed. This case was getting out of hand. “So we found another dead body that has nothing to do with the Kai West case? How is that even possible?”

I glanced at Tony. “I don’t know, but that’s what happened. The women look alike, but the tattoos on the neck are different.”

“What are the odds?”

“That’s a good question,” said Hattie. “I’m looking for missing person reports that match her description, but I have found nothing yet.”

Davies sighed heavily. “I’m getting calls daily about Kai West and closing his case. We can’t close his case until we see if there is any validity to Luditz’s claims. And we can’t do that until we find his daughter or someone who has seen her on the island.”

“The last thing she posted on social media was her getting on a plane. Nothing once she got here.”

Davies’ head fell into her hands. Something was frustrating her. At first, I thought it was us.
